What's A Holiday? You're A Holiday

Easter weekend is over and done with, and we were able to spend some time with friends and enjoy the holiday. Not that I was outside much. The Masters golf tournament was on and the temperatures outside were as chilly as Blitzen's ass on Christmas Eve (well, maybe not that chilly, but it was cool).

I once (on a boring day at work that I was wishing I had off) rated all the holidays and ranked the Civic Holiday number one on my list. The Civic Holiday is observed in many parts of Canada and it celebrates... actually, I have no idea what it celebrates. But the holiday is always on a Monday (which means a long weekend) and it takes place smack dab in the middle of summer.

We can never have too many holidays. Even if celebrating a date does not mean time off from work, it just makes the day that much more interesting if it is observed in some fashion.

In researching this blog post I did a Google search on “National Halitosis Day” "National Root Canal Day"  “National Slide Rule Day” "Oxygen Appreciation Day" and “National Wash Between Your Toes Day”.  Believe it or not, I came up with results on each.

So here are my proposals for some brand new holidays and observances. Where I’ve designated the day as a “National" holiday, I urge readers from outside of Canada to adopt these as your own as well. Just keep in mind during your revelry to thank a Canadian.

Some holidays will be more popular than others and may catch on. Some would be less popular than an American flag raising ceremony in Iran; observances such as Oil Company Love Day or Stephen Harper Day.

Do you enjoy a bacon, peanut butter, and banana sandwich now and then? That was Elvis Presley’s favorite sandwich. Perhaps sardines and walnuts on rye toast is more to your liking. Even if your choice is bologna with blue cheese and chocolate sauce, you can celebrate each May 7th on National Strange Sandwich Day.

A real favorite would be National Sleep In Until Noon Day. This could be on the third Monday in January when you’d rather pluck out all your nose hairs than go into work on that dark, snowy, dreary, frigid morning. My guess is that this one is already unofficially observed by a great many. We just need to make it a legitimate paid holiday.

How about National Hot Socks Day and National Sock Inventory Day? These ones could be fun. Who doesn’t love socks? Socks is even fun to say, “socks, socks, socks, socks”. The former holiday would be another mid-winter observance (let's say February 9) where celebrants can put on a pair of socks fresh and warm out of the dryer.  The latter one (July 18) would give you a full day’s opportunity to rummage through your sock drawers and see if you can find matches for those orphaned socks that are so often found in a dryer-load of clothes.

For those who want further information on orphaned socks, here is a useful website.

August 3 marks the day when local lake trout Minikin Molly emerges from her home in the waters of Lake Huron. If, upon leaping into the air, she sees her reflection in the water, we will have six more weeks of summer. Let's call this holiday Unscientific Means Of Forecasting The Weather Day.

Other important dates to look for:
International National Day (October 25)
Lazy, Hazy, Crazy, Day of Summer  (July 30)
National Shut Your Handheld Devices Off Day (I look forward to this one on September 14)
and
Snow Shoveling In Canada Day (December 21)

Unfortunately, that last one will not be a day off for retailers since my vision is for this to be a major shopping event. A percentage of all profits will rightfully go to the team here at SSIC.

Finally, you can just celebrate yourself and make every day a holiday.

As the Bee Gees said,
Ooh, you're a holiday, every day, such a holiday
Now it's my turn to say, and I say, you're a holiday...

Happy Holidays!

  1. Halitosis Day? Is that like a day to go to the dentist, I hope, or is it more like a day when you can go crazy with the garlic and celebrate your bad breath? Is there a contest? I would not like to be a judge on Halitosis Day. That would be my version of Hell.
    Hi!

    1. I would not want to judge such a contest either. You know, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a National Dandruff Day as well.

  2. You had me at National Strange Sandwich Day. It'll help bring back my beloved bolgna. Hold the chocolate sauce though.:) My next favourite would be the National Sleep in Until Noon day. I already try very hard to observe this on Sunday mornings.

    1. I thought everyone liked chocolate sauce on their bologna. I figured it was only the blue cheese that made it strange. :)

  3. LOL! It sounds like it should be a challenge on that weird reality show where they had to eat strange things.

  4. It seems like there is a "day" for everything. And don't forget Pi day.
    Thanks for the post.

  5. International National Day sounds hilarious. This is an interesting bunch of holidays. I didn't realize there were so many!

    Good luck with the challenge!

    1. And if that's not enough, there's more where those came from. Thanks for the comments Dianna.
