A Is For Accepted, Also, April (Also Also And And)

A is for accepted!

I've accepted the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. This could be quite a challenge as I am supposed to blog about something each day this April (except Sundays, (although today, being the first day of the month, is an exception to the exception)) and use all the letters of the alphabet for each day's topic starting with A on the first day, B on the second, C on the third, and so on.

Oh, you can blog it on a Monday, a Monday, a Monday is very, very good
Or you can blog it on a Tuesday, a Tuesday, a Tuesday, in fact I wish you would.
Or you can blog it on a Wednesday, a Thursday, a Friday, a Saturday is cool,
But never, never on a Sunday, a Sunday, a Sunday, ‘cause that’s the challenge rule.
Yet you can blog it on this Sunday, that's this day, the first day, don't be an April fool.

This could however be short-lived. Tomorrow I could say that b is for brain stall and call it quits. But at least that would be better than getting all the way to w before encountering writer's block.

Accepted does begin with a, but a could also be for, well, also, and it could also be for April Fools' Day which is today.

I've always hated April Fools' Day. I'm a little paranoid, and I believe that virtually everyone is trying to play a joke on me on that particular day. Bastards! I don't believe anything I read in the April 1st edition of the paper. I don't even believe what the gauges on my car tell me. I'm sure to run out of gas on some April Fools' Day. If someone were to say today that my house was on fire, I wouldn't believe it in spite of all the flames and smoke around me.

A precursor to April Fools' Day was the ancient Roman festival of Hilaria. It sounds like I'm making that up, but I'm not.

A Wikipedia article about April Fools' Day elaborates on this glorious time when we get to ridicule some unsuspecting schlemiel (like me). It says in part, "When someone has been fooled in Sweden, to disclose that it was a joke, the fooler says the rhyme "April April din dumma sill, jag kan lura dig vart jag vill" (April, April, you stupid herring, I can fool you to wherever I want)."

HA HA HA!!! Those crazy Swedes and their herrings! It's funny that they would use the phrase "stupid herring" because I was under the impression that herrings were loved in Sweden. That would be like us North Americans referring to a fool as an "idiotic hamburger". But I'm not sure about the English translation of the rest of the phrase. It could be just a bad translation which should have read, "I can fool you whenever I want", or it could be that Wikipedia is playing an April Fools' joke on me. Bastards!

I must remember never to visit Sweden on April 1st.

The article states further that in Spain and Ibero-America "an equivalent date is December 28, Christian day of celebration of the Massacre of the Innocents". Oh yeah, that sounds like an appropriate date to coincide with a day of jokes and laughter. You're not having fun with us again, are you Wikipedia?

So, be wary today. Keep in mind that you may be targeted for someone's twisted idea of amusement at your own expense.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't have fun and laugh. The best way to get a good chuckle is to call the local corner store and ask them if they have Prince Albert in a can. The clerk is sure to get a good chortle out of that! He will hang up and say to his assistant, "You won't believe what some old fogy just asked for!"

So enjoy the day.

Oh, and by the way, your fly is open.

  1. My best memory of an April Fool's joke was when some senior students in high school brought a horse into a math class. A horse. Can you believe that? I wish I could remember more about it but alas, the aging brain gets fuzzier. I am a little disturbed at the "Christian day of celebration of the Massacre of the Innocents". But thanks for reinforcing why I don't go to church! "A" was for anxiety for me today. But I managed to finally complete a post. Okay, I am off to visit around the blogosphere. On to "B" we go.....

    1. Glad to hear you got the blog post in. The horse story is crazy! Are you sure it wasn't just some elaborate April Fools' joke to make you think there was an actual horse in the class?
